Southern Style Collard Greens With Smoked Turkey Necks

The southern style of cooking of greens came with the arrival of african slaves to the southern colonies and the need to satisfy their hunger and provide food for their families. This recipe cooks collard greens in a flavored broth made of smoked pork neck bones onion and spices. I love collard greens.

Collard greens have been cooked and used for centuries. If you like them to you must try this collard greens recipe. I just realized that i have never uploaded a complete collard green recipe for all of my friends. To make the broth you can also use salt pork smoked ham hocks or smoked turkey necks wings or legs. I boil these ingredients in water for a purer pork flavor but you can also use chicken stock if you prefer.

There are a million recipes for southern collard greens but not everyone makes good greens. For this greens recipe i use smoked turkey instead of smoked ham hocks fat back or bacon. Both of my grandma s killed it in the kitchen and their knowledge poured into my mom and now it s all mine. My grandmother on my dad s side may she rest used to whip them up special for me pretty much any time i wanted them. I ve been eating southern style collard greens for as long as i can remember.
